Abstract

This research study aimed to investigate the challenges faced by selected informal traders in Central Durban, KwaZulu Natal, and their impact on economic growth. The informal sector in South Africa has the potential to alleviate unemployment but encounters various constraints, including limited capital; a shortage of qualified personnel; government policies; and high operating costs. There has been a surge in informal traders, with the South African government actively promoting entrepreneurship to address unemployment. The literature review explored the concept of the informal sector and the factors contributing to informal trading. The researcher adopted a qualitative approach, utilising structured interviews as the primary method of data collection. The research findings from the results will contribute to bridging the existing gap in literature by providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by informal traders and their implications for economic development. Ethical considerations such as informed consent and confidentiality were addressed throughout the research process.
